Hernewood came into the Grant Thornton Intermediate A Boys Volleyball Championships seeded 2nd in the West. They would meet Vernon River, seeded 2nd in the East, for the Gold. For complete recap, click Read More.The Hernewood Huskies defeated the Vernon River Mustangs 3-1 to capture the 2018 P.E.I.S.A.A Grant Thornton Intermediate A Boys Volleyball Championships on Thursday. The tournament was held at Hernewood Intermediate School. This was the first ever Provincial A Boys title for Hernewood.
The Montague Mustangs captured the bronze medal with a 3-1 win over Ecole-sur-Mer.
Tournament most valuable player was Dylan Bridges of Hernewood. The all-stars were Noah Farrell of Ecole-sur-Mer, Eric Batten of Montague, James Wood and Dylan MacLean of Vernon River and Brandon Gard of Hernewood.
Semi-Finals Number # 1
Vernon River Mustangs over Ecole-sur-Mer Requins 3-2 (25-18, 25-22, 18-25, 24-26, 15-10)
The number two seed in the east Vernon River edged the number one seed in the west, Ecole-sur-Mer 3-2 to win the first semi-final. Vernon River took the first two sets (25-18, 25-22) to jump to a quick 2-0 lead in the match. But Ecole-sur-Mer battled back to win set three by a score of 25-18. In the fourth set, Vernon River seemed to be on the verge winning the match, leading 24-19. But after a side-out made it 24-20, Noah Farrell went back to serve for Ecole-sur-Mer. He would rifle six point to allow the Requins to win 26-24 and tie the match at 26-26.
In the final set, Dylan MacLean of Vernon River opened the game with a six-point serving rotation to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. With Vernon River leading 9-3, Ecole-sur-Mer narrowed the gap to 9-7. But a 5-point rotation by Evan Doherty put Vernon River up 14-7. After Ecole-sur-Mer closed the gap to 14-10, a side-out would give the Mustangs the win.
Semi-Finals Number 2
Hernewood Huskies over Montague Storm 3-1 (25-8, 15-25, 25-22, 27-25)
The number two seed in the west, Hernewood Huskies defeated the number one team in the east, the Montague Storm 3-1 to win the second semi-final. The Huskies opened the match with a 25-8 win in the first set. Montague would battle back to take the second set 25-15. In a back and forth game three, Hernewood would prevail 25-22.
Montague would open the fourth set with a 5-point service rotation by Jackson Skrynsky. The Storm would lead 10-5 and 14-8. At 17-10 it looked like the Storm were going to force a fifth and deciding set. But Hernewood was not dead yet. They battle back to take a 20-19 lead. The teams would battle each other. With the score tied at 25-25 and Montague serving, the Huskies forced a side-out before Bradley Hardy would serve the match winner and Hernewood would upset the defending Island champions Storm.
Bronze Medal
Montague Storm over Ecole-sur-Mer Requins (25-23, 25-22, 19-25, 25-20)
The Montague Storm defeated Ecole-sur-Mer Requins 3-1 to capture the bronze medal at the 2018 P.E.I.S.A.A. Intermediate A Boys championship. Montague took the first set 25-23. The second set was very close as well with Montague prevailing 25-22.
